International Women’s Day: Celebrating Emily Patterson at YMCA

On 8 March, we joined people around the world in marking International Women’s Day – recognising the women who inspire us, challenge us, and help create positive change in our communities.

At YMCA Robin Hood Group, we are proud to work alongside many incredible women. One of those remarkable individuals is Emily Patterson, a Senior Youth Support Worker in our Housing team. Emily’s dedication, compassion, and commitment to supporting young people shine across our organisation and beyond. Emily’s story resonates deeply with many of us, highlighting not only her resilience but also the positive influence she continues to have on the lives of young people.

Turning Experience into Purpose

Emily’s passion for supporting vulnerable young people is rooted in her own lived experience. As a teenager, she had spent time within the care system. Rather than letting those experiences define her future, Emily chose to use them to empower others.

Today, she uses her voice to raise awareness, share knowledge, and support young people who may be facing similar challenges. By speaking openly about her experiences, Emily helps young people understand that their circumstances do not define their potential and that support and positive change are always possible.

Her work has also extended beyond YMCA. During her time working with youth outreach initiatives linked to Nottinghamshire Police, Emily played an important role in engaging vulnerable young people and helping them access support and opportunities. Through her work delivering educational sessions and sharing her experiences, she helped raise awareness of exploitation, healthy relationships, and safeguarding among young people and professionals alike.

National Recognition for Inspiring Work

Emily’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, she received national recognition at a Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) awards event hosted by the National Police Chiefs’ Council and the College of Policing.

She was honoured for her work supporting children and young people affected by exploitation, as well as for the powerful impact of sharing her personal story to help others recognise the signs of abuse and seek support. Her engagement with young people was so effective that referrals to the Youth Outreach programme significantly increased after she joined, demonstrating the trust and connection she builds with those she supports.

A Role Model for Young People

Emily’s work today continues to reflect the same passion and purpose. Through her role at YMCA Robin Hood Group, she supports young people facing complex challenges, helping them build confidence, develop life skills, and work towards brighter futures.

Her empathy, honesty, and determination make her an incredible role model – not only for the young people she works with, but also for colleagues across the organisation and professionals across the wider sector.

Celebrating Women Who Create Change

Emily embodies the spirit of International Women’s Day: empowering others, breaking down barriers, and creating meaningful change. We are incredibly proud to have her as part of our team.

Thank you, Emily, for everything you do and for continuing to inspire us all. Let’s keep celebrating the brilliant women we work alongside every day.
