From Student to Teacher-in-the-Making: K’s Story

When K first moved into our Mansfield 16+ Cluster service, he arrived with a clear goal: to build a stable foundation for his future. Since then, he has done exactly that – and so much more.

Managing a tenancy while studying full-time at West Notts College is no small task, yet K approached both with determination and quiet focus. Staff noticed early on that he had a natural instinct for supporting others in the home – offering advice, helping peers stay motivated, and always stepping in when someone needed a hand.

Recently, West Notts College reached out to K with an unexpected request. A class was short-staffed, and they wondered if he would be willing to step in and support as an informal tutor.

He said yes – and absolutely excelled.

The college was so impressed by his confidence, empathy, and ability to connect with learners that they offered him a paid-to-learn position to continue developing his skills. To ensure this opportunity enhances – rather than complicates – his life, the college agreed on 10 hours a week, allowing him to continue receiving Universal Credit without disruption.

And the journey doesn’t stop there. Come February, K will be eligible to apply for a teacher-training qualification, fully supported by the college. A future he once thought impossible is suddenly opening up in front of him.

When K shared the news with the team, his excitement was contagious.

“I can’t believe this is happening. I could be a tutor at college… I just need to stay focused.”

His support worker couldn’t be prouder:

“We always knew he was able to help others from how he supports people in his home. This is just amazing news, and we’re all so proud of him.”

A Bright Future Ahead

K’s story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when young people are given the stability, encouragement and belief they need – and when they start believing in themselves. From managing his own home to stepping into the classroom as a role model for others, he has shown extraordinary resilience and potential.

We couldn’t be more excited to see where this next chapter takes him.
