“I’ve been at the YMCA in Worksop for nearly 3 years and it’s been a rollercoaster ride, with a few ups and downs and struggles, but since living here, I’ve been able to deal with my mental health. That has helped me to connect with people at college and make new friends.”
When Bryony first moved into YMCA Worksop, life felt uncertain and overwhelming. She moved in just a month after turning 18 and not long after her mum passed away. At such a young age, she was navigating grief, independence and challenges at home all at once.
The early days weren’t easy. “I was going downhill,” she shares. “And now I’m going uphill.”
Building Confidence and Independence
During her time at YMCA, Bryony has grown in ways she never expected. Living independently has helped her develop vital life skills, from learning how to budget properly to managing her own flat and learning how to cook.
“I’ve learnt to budget better. I struggled at the start and would waste money and run out of food each month, but my living skills have improved massively.” Beyond practical skills, the biggest transformation has been emotional.
“Being at the YMCA and at college has helped me manage my emotions by learning how to open up and talk about my feelings.” With the right environment and support around her, Bryony began to stabilise her mental health. That stability helped her reconnect with education and social life. She even gave a presentation on mental health at college, something that once would have felt impossible.
Looking Ahead
Bryony is finishing her Performing Arts course in June and is preparing to move into full-time work. This week, she is also moving into her own flat, which is another huge milestone. “We’re incredibly proud of how far she’s come and we can’t wait to see what she does next.” Her journey has not been straightforward. It has been a rollercoaster. But it is also proof of what happens when young people are given stability, space to grow and the right support at the right time. From feeling like she was going downhill to now moving uphill, Bryony’s future looks brighter than ever.
